                  For each of us, Christmas means different things. I assume, however, there are common grounds we all associate with this time of year. Whether snow or Santa or blinking lights, there are triggers we all have throughout Christmastime  I’m just not sure if there are more people sad at Christmas or glad at Christmas. Are those lights green and red or are they blue? The logical part of me argues for both. Despair in moderation, I suppose. For many, its not about moderation it’s about desperation. Christmas, for them, is but a constant reminder, a slap in the face of sheer misery. It can be hard enough just getting to Christmas let alone getting threw Christmas. The Snow

   Oliver had never seen real snow before. For all his five years, Frosty the Snowman was as close as he had gotten. Christmas Eve had always been a dry event as far as the front lawn could remember. Living just outside of Phoenix almost guaranteed a warm desert and a sunny Christmas morn. The storm front moved in and brought five inches of the white stuff with it. It had not snowed that much in the Phoenix area in over 50 years, if ever. Oliver watched the marvel from his parents’ front window. His folks had to shush him a time or two. His excitement was contagious. As his Mom and Dad prepared themselves, Oliver sat with his mud boots on, ready to go. He barely needed a jacket by the time it had all fallen. It was a wet day and a white day and a day the boy might never forget. He stepped out of the entrance, giggling and bouncing onto the porch. He was as taken aback as any child his age would be. ...

The Top of the Tree

    Henry was barely a tree when some stupid kid snapped his top off and tossed it onto the grassy knoll that served as an entrance to the tree farm. The lot was almost a forest. He watched as each Christmas traveler crushed his broken leader into the mud. It never really grew back. As the years passed, Henry became a strong and sturdy tree. He carried himself to the standard of any Christmas tree farm. For all his vigor and stature, year after year, come the day after Christmas and he stood alone. Sitting on the edge of the lot did him no good, without fail come the yuletide season and he found himself unwanted. Passersby would comment on his beauty then walk away and desert him once again. Henry started to believe that he would never be a real Christmas tree. Despite the constant rejection, Henry managed a purpose through the rest of the year.
